Telekom Baskets Bonn lived up to their favorite status in their season opener as they rolled past Veolia Towers Hamburg 96-72 at home. John-Michael Wright shined in his first game with Bonn, burying 7 three-pointers for 25 points while Germans Patrick Heckmann and Joel Aminu both scored 13 points. Hamburg were paced by Mathys Kangudia with 16 points.
Turning Point: Bonn came out of halftime already up by 11 points but made sure Hamburg could not gain confidence in the third quarter. The hosts scored the first seven points of the second half to open an 18-point lead 52-34. Bonn knocked down five three-pointers over the rest of the period and the game was decided.
Duel in focus: Hamburg point guard Noah Thomasson shined in the team's Netto BBL Pokal German Cup win over ROSTOCK SEAWOLVES with 27 points. But he struggled shooting with 13 points on 4 of 12 shooting and dished out 3 assists with 3 turnovers. Joel Aminu countered with 13 points including 3 three-pointers while also picking up 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 0 turnovers in 21 minutes.
Numbers Please: Bonn knocked down 48 percent from three-point land while holding Hamburg to just 39 percent overall from the field. The hosts also committed only 6 turnovers in the game - just one (!) in the first 20 minutes. Not bad for the opening game of the season.
Player of the Game: John-Michael Wright could not really have had a better first game in a Bonn uniform. The guard's performance was highlighted by his 7 three-pointers (on 9 attempts) and 25 points but he also grabbed 6 rebounds to go with 3 assists and only committed 1 turnover.
The Germans: Joel Aminu played a big role for Bonn as he scored 13 points with 3 three-pointers while Patrick Heckmann contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds and Melvin Jostmann chipped in 9 points. At the other end, Kenneth Ogbe collected 7 points and 4 rebounds and Martin Breunig had 6 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
Bonn successful in search for shooters: Bonn shot only 26.7 percent on three-pointers last season and while they kept nine players from the squad, their additions were designed to help their outside shooting. John-Michael Wright and Marcus Foster combined for three triples as Bonn made their first 5 triple attempts of the new season. The team ended up shooting 13 of 27 from downtown for 48.1 percent - Wright hitting 7 of 9 and Foster making 2 of 3 triples for 10 points.
What's Up Next: Bonn’s next league game will be on the road on Friday September 25 when they play at VET-CONCEPT Gladiators Trier. Hamburg will have their home opener on Friday September 25 against NINERS Chemnitz.
