Phoenix Hagen survived a valiant comeback to beat EWE Baskets Oldenburg 87-78 on the road for their first win of the season and their first easyCredit BBL victory in more than a decade. The promoted side nearly wasted a 17-point fourth quarter lead but improved to 1-4 with Trenton Gibson pouring in 22 points including the dagger three-pointer. Oldenburg have now lost two straight games for a 3-2 mark despite Jeremy Roach scoring 19 points.
Turning Point: Hagen used a 16-5 run to take a 15-point lead in the second quarter and the advantage was 14 at the break. Hagen pushed the cushion to 17 points with 6:45 minutes to go only to see Oldenburg put together a 15-2 run to make it a four-point game. But Trenton Gibson drained a dagger three-pointer with 35 seconds left to decide the game.
Duel in focus: Gibson was a scoring threat all game with 22 points for the visitors. One of the players who was supposed to slow him down could not get the job done. Oldenburg's Zach Ensminger came off the bench and did pick up 8 points in 28 minutes.
Numbers Please: Hagen shot 52 percent from the field including 47 percent from long range while Oldenburg made 35 percent on three-pointers and 67 percent from the foul line.
Player of the Game: Gibson was there all game for the guests with 22 points including hitting 4 of 7 three pointers and 6 of 7 free throws. He also chipped in 2 assists and 3 steals.
The Germans: Bjarne Kraushaar played a strong role in the win with 8 points, 4 assists and 1 steal while Fabian Bleck matched his season high in the Bundesliga with 4 points to go with 2 rebounds and 1 assist. At the other end, Nicholas Tischler collected 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and Zach Ensminger added 8 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal.
3,814 days later - Hagen win in the Bundesliga: Hagen naturally returning to the Bundesliga for the first time since 2017 means it’s been a while since their last victory. But the team went 0-11 during the 2016-17 season and withdrew from the competition. The last time the team won a Bundesliga game came on May 1, 2016, beating Crailsheim 94-83 in the last game of the season - 3,814 days ago.
In street clothes: Oldenburg were missing the trio of JaQualyn Gilbreath, Le’Tre Darthard and Nate Johnson while Hagen did not have the services of Anthony Polite.
What's Up Next: Oldenburg’s next game will be the Round of 16 matchup at home against Telekom Baskets Bonn in the Netto BBL Pokal German Cup on Saturday October 17. Oldenburg will then host BMA365 Bamberg Baskets in the league on Friday October 23. Hagen will be taking on ratiopharm ulm in the German Cup Round of 16 on the road on Saturday October 17.
