FC Bayern Munich made sure the return to Frankfurt of head coach Gordie Herbert and Johannes Voigtmann was a good memory with a 91-84 road victory over SKYLINERS in the Round 8 make-up game. The league leaders Bayern pulled away with 9-0 spurt to start the fourth quarter to improve to 9-3 for their seventh win in the last eight games in Germany - including their win over RASTA Vechta in the German BBL Cup Quarter-Finals. Niels Giffey scored 22 points and Ivan Kharchenkov tallied a career high 20 points for Bayern. Frankfurt dropped to 3-10 with their eighth loss in the last nine games in the league despite Malik Parsons pouring in 26 points off the bench.

Player of the Game: Ivan Kharchenkov set a career high with 20 points on 8 of 11 shooting and 3 of 6 free throws to go with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. The 18-year-old Kharchenkov already eclipsed his previous scoring best of 13 points (against EWE Baskets Oldenburg on May 7, 2023) in the first half with 15 points at the break. Kharchenkov also converted his first triple of the season after missing his first 14 three-point attempts.
The Germans: Besides Ivan Kharchenkov, Bayern got solid production from their other Germans as Niels Giffey scored a season-best 22 points to lead the team; Andreas Obst picked up 13 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists; Elias Harris had 9 points and 3 rebounds; and Johannes Voigtmann chipped in 4 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Also Newsworthy Part 1: Bayern’s coach Gordie Herbert was back in the Süwag Energie ARENA in Frankfurt for the first time since his last game as Skyliners playcaller in 2019. "It was pretty surreal coming in this morning for the shoot-around," said the coach. Herbert had three coaching stints with Frankfurt and guided the club to the 2004 league championship and the 2016 FIBA Europe Cup crown. Johannes Voigtmann was a part of the European trophy-winning team, playing for Frankfurt in the Bundesliga from 2012 to 2016.
Also Newsworthy Part 2: Bayern came to Frankfurt without leading guards Carsen Edwards and Nick Weiler-Babb and Onuralp Bitim went down injured early in the second quarter with a right hip issue. The Turkish international slipped on a sticker on a drive to the basket and did not return to the game.
What's Up Next: Frankfurt's next game will be on Saturday January 4 at NINERS Chemnitz. Bayern will start 2025 in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague with a road game against Real Madrid on Friday January 3. Gordie Herbert's team will play in the Bundesliga next at ALBA BERLIN on Sunday January 5.
