ratiopharm ulm spoiled Phoenix Hagen’s first home game in the Bundesliga in nearly 10 years by picking up their second win in as many games with a 93-78 road victory. Michael Rataj paced six Ulm players in double figures with 18 points while Simi Shittu contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Polley and Adam Kunkel both scored 15 points off the bench for Hagen, who fell to 0-2.
Turning Point: A week after giving up the first 20 points of the game to ROSTOCK SEAWOLVES, Hagen watched Ulm pull ahead by 10 points in the opening quarter. After Hagen had tied it late in the first half, the guests put together a 12-2 run spanning the middle two quarters to lead 47-37. Ulm maintained the lead and expanded it to as many as 21 points the rest of the way.
Duel in focus: Ulm’s youngster Michael Rataj dominated the anticipated matchup with the veteran Fabian Bleck in grabbing the win. Rataj scored 18 points with 4 assists. Bleck collected 4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.
Numbers Please: Ulm committed only 8 turnovers while forcing Hagen into 16 miscues. The visitors also shot 67 percent on two-pointers.
Player of the Game: Michael Rataj did some of everything for the winners with 18 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block.
The Germans: In addition to Rataj's production, Ulm's German-American Devin Schmidt had 4 points, 3 assists and 2 steals. At the other end, Bjarne Kraushaar tallied 8 points, 2 rebouds, 7 assists and 1 steal and Marvin Omuvwie chipped in 5 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal.
A long time coming: Just how long has it been since Hagen fans waited for a home game in the Bundesliga? How about 3,590 days! Their last home game in Germany's top flight at the Ischelandhalle came on November 26, 2016 - nearly a decade ago.
What's Up Next: Hagen will not have to wait long to get back on the court as they travel to NINERS Chemnitz on Sunday September 27. Ulm for their part have a home game on Sunday September 27 against Fitness First Würzburg Baskets before their BKT EuroCup debut at home against Balkan Botevgrad on Tuesday September 29.
