Fitness First Würzburg Baskets shrugged off their third game in six days to win an overtime thriller 104-100 at RASTA Vechta. Würzburg, who played twice in the Basketball Champions League during the week, wasted a 12-point lead in the third quarter and finally prevailed in extra time after 11 lead changes and 13 ties. The guests won their second straight game in the Bundesliga and sixth in the last seven games for an 11-4 record. Brae Ivey poured in 25 points with 6 assists to lead the way for the winners and Davion Mintz added 18 points. Vechta have dropped three of the last four games to fall to 6-8 including just 2-5 at home. The hosts could not take advantage of Alonzo Verge scoring 27 points with 11 assists and TJ Bamba had 22 points.

Game Summary: The first quarter was both teams feeling each other out with Eddy Edigin scoring eight points to put Würzburg up 12-10. Two triples at the other end gave the hosts the biggest lead at 17-12. Brae Ivey drained two three-pointers as Würzburg nosed back up 18-17 but Vechta led 20-19 after 10 minutes. Trailing 24-22, Vechta shut down Würzburg for nearly 4 minutes with a 13-2 run as Tommy Kuhse converted a four-point play to make it 35-26. Würzburg twice trimmed the gap to two points but went into the locker room down 45-41.
Würzburg had the better start to the second half and used a 20-2 run to build a 61-49 lead. Vechta answered with the next seven points and a second triple from Tevin Brown got the hosts within 63-59. But Würzburg were up 67-61 after 30 minutes. Vechta gave up a triple to start the final frame to fall behind by nine points and failed to score for more than 2 minutes. The hosts then reeled off 7 straight points thanks to a technical foul and unsportsmanlike foul from Würzburg to pull within 70-68. Würzburg managed to open a bit of space with two Davion Mintz triples for an 84-77 cushion with 3 minutes to go. But Kuhse hit twice from downtown to knot the game 86-86 with 49 seconds remaining. After two Johnathan Stove free throws, Alonzo Verge hit a layup but failed to convert the bonus free throw and Stove got behind the defense for a dunk with 7.2 seconds left. Verge made up for the miss as he drained a jumper with 0.6 seconds to play and send the game to overtime. In the extra session, Ivey and Mintz hit three-pointers and Ivey made 4 of 4 free throws for 104-100 lead with 15 seconds to go and secure the win.

Numbers Please: Würzburg connected on 58 percent for the gmae including 56 percent from long range. They collected 11 fast break points to zero for Vechta.

Player of the Game: Brae Ivey has really turned into the MVP candidate many people thought he would be upon his arrival in Würzburg from Veolia Towers Hamburg. The point guard collected 25 points on 7 of 12 shots and 8 of 10 free throws to go with 1 rebound, 6 assists and 2 steals for an efficiency of 25. Ivey is averaging 19.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 3.0 steals in the last four games.

The Germans: Eddy Edigin tied his season-high with 14 points to go with 4 rebounds and 1 assist in just 15 minutes of action for the winners and Christian Skladanowski had 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. At the other end, Tibor Pleiß collected 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal.

Würzburg bigs outplay Vechta's frontline: Vechta were missing Philipp Herkenhoff and Würzburg really took advantage of that. Playing without leading scorer Marcus Carr, the guests' lowpost players shined as Charles Thompson came off the bench for 13 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 5 blocks. Add to that Eddy Edigin's 14 points and 4 rebounds and Würzburg dominated the paint - 52 points to 40.

What's Up Next: Vechta will remain at home for their next league game as they welcome ALBA BERLIN on Saturday January 17. Würzburg meanwhile host Patrioti Levice on Wednesday January 14 in the decisive Game 3 of the Basketball Champions League Play-Ins. Their next Bundesliga game is at BMA365 Bamberg Baskets on Saturday January 17.
